Tchegera Island Attractions and Activities, DR Congo Wildlife Safaris and Tours
Tchegera Island is one of the major Island destinations in DR Congo and Africa at large. Tchegera Island Tent Camp Paradise is a one-of-a-kind tented camp on Tchegera Island in the heart of Lake Kivu.
Tchegera Island is a U-shaped collapsed volcanic caldera that's now partly submerged in shimmering blue water. The Island is located just a 15 to 20-minute boat ride from Goma harbor. The Island is perfect for relaxing after hiking the Virunga ranges and Gorilla trekking in Virunga National Park and also for those who want to relax away from the hustles of life.
The island is a haven of tranquility and with nothing but the eight tents of Tchegera Island Camp; you can expect peaceful nights and the most wonderful kind of silence in the stunning natural surroundings. If you decide to spend the night at Tchegera Islands, you will be amazed by the spectacular views of Nyiragongo and Nyamuragira as their glowing red lava pierces a star-covered sky. So, you will see the red light and the rushes of smoke emanating from the craters of these respective volcanoes.
Tchegera Island Tented Camp provides the ideal place for restoration. Each tent has views over Lake Kivu and across four volcanoes with a clear sky, and days can be spent simply relaxing. The main shared area is a simple mess tent and includes a lounge, space to eat communally, and a bar.
There are eight safari-style tented rooms at Tchegera Island Camp, which can be set up as either single, double, or twin, that sit on the black sandy shore of the island. The tents are simple but comfortable, with flushing loos, bucket showers, and power from a generator. Each has a small veranda for sitting outside and watching the sun go down over the lake.
Tourist activities that travelers can enjoy on Tchegera Island include kayaking, birding, nature walks, canoeing, swimming in the fresh waters, picnicking in some of the most beautiful areas around Tchegera Island as well as paddle boarding, fishing, scenic and sunset viewing.
Things to do at Tchegera Island:
Swimming:
With a natural beach with volcanic sands, visiting Tchegera Island in Virunga National Park is your only opportunity to find a natural beach in the city. You will notice that most of the lake edge in Goma is rugged following the successive volcanic eruptions that have even formed the city of Goma, pushing back the lake.
Kayaking:
Kayaking is one of the favorite activities of the majority of visitors to the island. Whether you know how to swim or not, thanks to the life jackets and the continuous supervision of the lifeguards, spend exceptional moments sailing in the bay of the island with fresh and calm waters.
Bird watching, panoramic views, and hiking:
Visiting Tchegera Island in Virunga National Park must necessarily involve learning about the rich history that this place abounds. Also called Pig Island, Tchegera is a part of Virunga National Park that was little known until 2017. It was during this period that the park regained its rights to the detriment of a former member of parliament who illegally held property on the island and was farming there. Under the guidance of your guide, follow the trails to observe the birds and have a beautiful view of the two highest volcanoes of Virunga: Mikeno and Karisimbi apart naturally from the Nyiragongo Volcano and Nyamulagira. In addition, during the hike, you observe the beautiful landscapes of Lake Kivu and its surroundings.
Access to Tchengera Island:
The island can be accessed by either hiring a Virunga boat, booking a private boat, or a kayak. These boats to Tchegera Island start from either Goma harbor or Kituku port and it takes a 15 to 20-minute ride from Goma mainland to Tchegera. You will enjoy the great scenery during your journey before arriving at Tchegera Island for the next activity.
Normally, a boat sets off from Tchegera Island to Goma at approximately 7:30 am. For those with transfers to Kigali for their outbound flights, this is the best schedule from the island to the mainland.
