Rwanda is often called the land of the thousand hills. While visiting this country, everywhere you look you will see the beautiful green hills. In Rwanda, you can enjoy culture, nature, primates, and the beaches of Lake Kivu!
The most popular park of Rwanda is Volcanoes National Park, where you can track the Rwanda mountain gorillas, the Rwanda golden monkeys, different hikes in this dramatic and amazing volcanic landscape. RWANDA SAFARI TOURS PLACES TO VISIT!
Rwanda Gorilla Tracking Safari Tour.
For many travelers, the tracking of gorillas ranks among one of the most exhilarating highlights of their trip to Africa. Mountain Gorillas are one of the world’s most endangered species of apes. It is estimated that there are currently less than 900 individuals left throughout the world.
Nearly half of these can be found in Uganda, but significant populations can also be found in the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Parc National de Volcans in Rwanda. Out of the 15 gorilla groups in Rwanda, 10 are habituated to humans and so can be visited by tourists.
All gorilla groups are accessed from the same location and, unlike Uganda; you cannot reserve a specific group in advance. On the morning of the tracking, park rangers will select people for different gorilla groups according to preference, age, and fitness level. For this reason, we advise older people, or those wanting only a light hike, to track in Rwanda. Gorilla permits in Rwanda cost US$1.500, Uganda is 700$ and the Democratic Republic of Congo is 400$.
Gorilla Groups in Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda: Susa, Sabyinyo, Amahoro, Agashya, Umubano, Kwitonda, Hirwa, Karisimbi, Ugende, and Bwenge.
Please Note:
- A maximum of 8 visitors may visit a family/group of habituated gorillas per day.
- To avoid exposing our furry friends to strange germs, wash your hands before you head out for the tracking.
- Do not leave garbage in the park.
- Always keep your voices low. This will ensure that you will be able to observe the beautiful birds and other wildlife in the forest.
- Your group of trackers will be heading to the stop where the guides left the gorillas the day before. From the nesting spot, you will track them to their current location. This can take anywhere from 15 minutes to 2 hours.
- As you approach the gorillas, the guides will signal when to get your cameras ready.
- It is okay to ask the guide questions, but keep your voices low.
- Do not eat or drink while you are near the gorillas.
- Sometimes the gorillas charge. Follow the guide’s example by crouching down slowly, and do not look into the gorillas in the eyes. Wait for the gorilla to pass you by and do not attempt to run away (as this can increase the risk of attack).
- Flash photography is not permitted; when taking pictures, move slowly and carefully.
- Do not touch the gorillas. Keep in mind that though they may look warm and cuddly, they are still wild animals. Keep a distance of at least 7 meters (21 feet) from the gorillas at all times.
- The maximum time visitors are allowed to spend with the gorillas is exactly one hour and the rangers are quite strict about this.
Nyungwe Forest National Park Safari Tour
Nyungwe Forest National Park enjoys some of the richest biodiversity in all of Africa. Often compared with Kibale Forest in Uganda, Nyungwe is one of the oldest green expanses in the continent and includes a very wide variety of rare and endangered species including troops of chimpanzees and other primates.
When to visit Nyungwe Forest National Park on Rwanda safari Tour
The Nyungwe Forest National Park can be visited year-round and the chimps are often easier to find during the wet season (mid-March to mid-May). It is equatorial rainforest and trails can get extremely wet and muddy, so it is best to have good shoes and a rain jacket.
Nyungwe Forest National Park Chimpanzee Tracking Safari Tour in Rwanda.
Chimpanzees share an estimated 94.7% of their DNA with humans and many of their behaviors may remind you of a close cousin. One of the highlights of any trip to Rwanda is the opportunity to get up close and personal with these apes in their natural environment. The habituation process is still ongoing and there can be times when you cannot glimpse them with your eyes, but you will know they are there from the hoots and hollers they make. Nyungwe Forest National Park actually provides a haven to 25% of all African primate species, and you are sure to come across at least one troop of colobus monkeys during your stay in the forest.
Nyungwe Forest Walk Tour.
You can go to East Africa’s only canopy walk. This Nyungwe Forest Walk Tour runs along a ridge before climbing a 50m-high platform and a suspended walkway above a steep and deep valley stretching across the massive forest and lasts about 1½ hours. It takes you through some beautiful foliage and animal species. You have a chance to spot blue monkeys and unique birds that dwell in the upper levels of the forest.
Parc National Des Volvans Safari Tour
Comprising five volcanoes, the Virungas forms the border between Rwanda, Uganda, and DR Congo and are one of the most beautiful sights in Africa. In addition to the chance to see the Rwanda mountain gorillas, visitors can also have a chance to encounter a troop of rare golden monkeys on one of many climbs or treks around the Park.
Kigali Capital City Tour
Sprawling over several hills and verdant valleys, the flowering tree-lined streets and boulevards of this modern city are much calmer than those of neighboring Kampala (Uganda) and Nairobi (Kenya). There is an excellent selection of cafes and restaurants, many with wonderful views over the broad valleys of the city. A wide range of traditional souvenir shops makes a good stop between your sightseeing in the city.
Nyamata Church Rwanda Tour.
In Bugesera district, south of Kigali sits the small town Nyamata where shortly after the 7th April 1994 outbreak of the genocide, many ethnic Tutsis and moderate Hutus took refuge in churches. At the Nyamata Catholic Church, militias killed an estimated 10,000 people in and around the grounds between the 14th and 19th of April 1994. The church now serves as an homage to those who perished as well as those who have endured tragedy in the family. The excavated clothing and skeletal remains of the deceased as well as personal stories of survivors are on display.
Kigali Memorial Centre Tour In Rwanda
Walking the streets of Kigali today, it is hard to imagine the 100 days of madness in which an estimated one million Tutsis and moderate Hutus were systematically butchered by the Interahamwe in one of the most savage genocides in history. This center has been built near the mass graves of 250,000 of those who perished and attempts to explain the event in context - from the divisive colonial experience in Rwanda and the heinous crimes that took place in 1994 to the aftermath of the genocide and the search for justice. The tour concludes with a section about other massacres of global significance.
Rwanda Kibuye Safari Tour
The steep surrounding hills fall into deep green waters amid nearby islands making this an extremely picturesque town midway down the coast of Lake Kivu. A few small sandy spots invite you to take a refreshing dip or launch a kayak to explore the indented shoreline. The gruesome chapter of the history of this town is explained in the Genocide Memorial Church near the center.
Akagera National Park
Akagera National Park covers 2500 km² of savannah west of the Kagera River, in the northeast of Rwanda. The Akagera National Park has a variety of wildlife and is a habitat for over 500 different species of birds. Herds of elephants and buffalo emerge from the woodland to drink at the lakes, while you might stumble across a leopard, a spotted hyena, or even a lion. Giraffe and zebra haunt the savannah, and more than a dozen types of antelope inhabit the park.
Lake Ihema Boat Safari Tour
The boat trip on Lake Ihema will not disappoint. Drift along the forest-fringed lake edge, past huddles of hippo and basking crocodiles. For the serious birder, a boat trip is a must with a high density of water birds and the rare Lilac-breasted Roller!

Kigali, in the centre of the country, has a typical daily temperature range between 12 °C (54 °F) and 27 °C (81 °F), with little variation through the year. There are some temperature variations across the country; the mountainous west and north are generally cooler than the lower-lying east. There are two rainy seasons in the year; the first runs from February to June and the second from September to December. These are separated by two dry seasons: the major one from June to September, during which there is often no rain at all, and a shorter and less severe one from December to February.
Rwanda Visa
Visas are required by everyone except nationals of Germany, South Africa, Sweden, the UK, the USA and other East African countries. All other nationalities must either obtain a visa in their country of residence from a Rwandan embassy or high commission. The cost of the visa is alternatively, travelers can obtain a "Visa Acceptance Form" online.
The process is a bit confusing, so please follow these steps: but we are always to assist.
Step 1: Gather the necessary information before surfing to the migration website from Rwanda:
The invitation letter from Ultimate Wild Safaris. The entry point into the country (probably Kigali Airport).
Your passport details Step 2:
Visit Migration website: https://www.migration.gov.rw/home/ Step 3:
Choose a Language. Step 4:

Receive your visa acceptance by mail 3 to 7 days after sending your form. Upon arrival at the border, you will be asked to present this letter along with US$ 30 for a single-entry 30-day visa.
Rwanda Money /Cash
The official currency of Rwanda is the Rwandan Franc (Rwf Many lodge and restaurant prices will be set in US dollars while outside of lodges souvenirs, snacks, etc.) Francs will be necessary. US dollars printed before 2006 are not accepted in the country. When you exchange money, use big notes (50 or 100 US dollar). The exchange rate of smaller notes is much lower. Make sure notes are not cut, or damaged in any way. They will not be accepted. We advise that you budget your cash needs per person:
Rwanda Exchange Rates
You can change dollars, pounds and Euros at the border posts and Kigali and at major banks in certain secondary cities. It’s good to have some US dollars with you at all times. Before leaving the country, you may exchange Francs into Euros, dollars or pounds (obviously at a less favorable rate).
Rwanda ATM:
Bank of Kigali and other bank have ATMs that will accept international Visa cards.
Rwanda Credit Card:
Credit cards are not yet used much in Rwanda. Only at mayor hotels and upmarket lodges can this be used, but these will sometimes add a surcharge.
Rwanda Charging Points:
You can charge your cameras, phones and other electric items in most hotels. If you bring a couple of chargeable items you might consider bringing an adaptor with extra outlets since the amount of outlets is often limited. We'd advise you to bring extra batteries for your camera, since some hotels don’t have power and power cuts might occur.
Tour Luggage
We request you to bring a bag or suitcase made from a soft material. Hard cover suitcases are difficult to place in the car and are likely to break on the bumpy roads. When traveling with 4 persons or more we request you to limit the weight of your bag/suitcase to 15 kg.
Traveler Cheques: Traveler cheques are not accepted in Rwanda.
Tipping Tipping is common in the cities these days due to the large international tourist presence. In restaurants, we recommend a tip of about 10% of the bill. For your entire tour group, a common tip of US$10 per day can be expected for your driver / guide.
Rwanda Plugs and Voltage Western European-style plugs (type c) with two pins: 230 V,50 Hz. are used throughout the country. See photo on the side.
Rwanda Internet Internet cafes can be found though the connection (especially outside Kigali) is generally very slow. WIFI is sometimes available in lodges and it is possible to buy a 3G mobile internet USB dongle to be used with your laptop. It will cost around US$ 30 and is for sale in Kigali along with various sizes of data packages.
Rwanda Phone Mobile telephone has become very big in Rwanda. Throughout the country sim cards sell for less than a US dollar which you then can top up with credit and make reasonably priced calls to most international destinations. Most urban areas have reception, the country code for Rwanda is 00250 or + 250
Gay Travelers Throughout Africa it is generally safe for gay people to travel. Unlike in neighboring Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, there is no official prohibition against homosexuality in Rwanda and it is unlikely that gay travelers will experience any particular difficulties.
Health Tips
Contact your general practitioner at least 8 weeks before your trip to check whether you need any vaccinations or other preventive measures. Country specific information and advice is published by the National Travel Health Network and Centre, and useful information about healthcare abroad, including a country-by-country guide of reciprocal health care agreements with the UK, is available from NHS Choices. Medical facilities in Rwanda are limited, particularly outside major towns. Medical help at the scene of an accident is likely to be equally scarce. In the case of a serious accident or illness, evacuation by air ambulance may be required. Make sure you have adequate travel health insurance and accessible funds to cover the cost of any medical treatment abroad and/or repatriation.
Rwanda Safety and Risks
Rwanda is a relatively safe country to travel in and the people are considered to be very polite and welcoming. You should take the usual safety precautions and contact your local embassy for more safety instructions during your tour.
Air Ambulance Scheme
Medical facilities in East Africa are limited. This is especially true for some of the remote places where your safari may take you. In case of a serious medical emergency, getting to the nearest full-service hospital may mean a long ground transfer over poor roads. Fortunately, for registered clients we can contact with AMREF Flying Doctors to respond without delay in the event of an incident and coordinate directly with work with the client’s overseas insurance company (though it is not necessary to have such insurance to qualify for this tour.

9). CANCELLATION OF A TOUR BY THE CLIENT
If the client is prevented through reasons completely beyond such client’s control from proceeding with a tour as booked the client may, if possible, transfer his/her tour booking to a person who satisfies all the conditions applicable to the tour, provided that the client gives notice to Ultimate Wild Safaris Ltd of the client’s intention to transfer no less than 14 days before the date when the tour departure is due to take place. Where such a transfer is made, the transferring client and the transferee client shall be jointly and severally liable to Ultimate Wild Safaris Ltd for payment of the price of the tour (or, if part of the price has been paid, for payment of the balance) and for any additional costs arising from such transfer. For private tours, Ultimate Wild Safaris Ltd can also reserve the tour for a client should they decide to postpone the tour to a later date.
The client however will be responsible for paying cancellation fees as per the cancellation policy and also for any unforeseen extra costs which arise until the client does the tour at a later date (i.e. – accommodation costs, transportation costs, fuel costs, dues, taxes or fees chargeable for services such as third party supplier costs, currency and exchange fluctuations, park fees, increases in taxes, or government action which impacts the price of the applicable tours).
10). CANCELLATIONS AND CHANGES
The client acknowledges by booking a tour with Ultimate Wild Safaris Ltd that the nature of adventure travel, especially in Africa, requires considerable flexibility and acknowledges that they will permit reasonable alterations to the tour and/or itinerary by Ultimate Wild Safaris Ltd. The client acknowledges their understanding that the route, schedules, timings, accommodations, itineraries, amenities and mode of transport may be subject to change without prior notice due to circumstances or events, which may include sickness or mechanical breakdown, incidents in the location where the tour will be operated, flight cancellations, strikes, events emanating from political disputes, entry or border difficulties, extreme weather and other unpredictable or unforeseeable circumstances which are beyond the reasonable control of Ultimate Wild Safaris Ltd and that Ultimate Wild Safaris Ltd is not liable to any client for such changes or amendments.
Ultimate Wild Safaris Ltd shall not be liable to pay any discounts or refunds for missed or unused services which were missed or unused by the client due to no fault of Ultimate Wild Safaris Ltd, its suppliers, or representatives, which shall include any termination of the client’s participation in the tour due to the client’s own fault, negligence or breach of these Terms and Conditions. Although Ultimate Wild Safaris Ltd will strive to ensure that the tour you have booked goes as planned, we do not guarantee that we will abide by the agreed tour itinerary and we, therefore, reserve the right to amend the tour itinerary where doing so may be necessary or advantageous. We will strive to notify you of any changes prior to the tour departure. However, Ultimate Wild Safaris Ltd is not obligated to do so, nor shall not be liable to pay any refunds that may be claimed to result from such changes.
Ultimate Wild Safaris Ltd is not in control of the management of the accommodation providers we use on our tours. Therefore, in some circumstances, we may be notified by our accommodation providers that our reserved accommodation is no longer available, due to reasons that are beyond our control and not the fault or negligence of Ultimate Wild Safaris Ltd. In such circumstances, we will provide alternative accommodation of at least the same standard or higher standard. Where it may be absolutely necessary to amend the tour itinerary during the tour, the tour guide will arrange the best available alternative. The decision to do so will rest on the tour guide and his/her decision is final. This is mainly applicable but not limited to mountain climbing products where the guide believes the client is not able to continue with the climb due to illness, injury, extreme weather, or other factors beyond the guide’s control.
11). RISK
The client acknowledges that the nature of our tour products is adventurous and may involve a significant amount of risk to clients’ health and/or safety. The client hereby assumes all such risk and does hereby release Ultimate Wild Safaris Ltd from all claims and causes of action arising from any losses, damages or injuries or death resulting from these risks inherent in travel, including adventure travel specifically, visiting wild and remote areas, and participating in adventurous activities such as those included in the tour itineraries.
Standards of hygiene, accommodation, and transport in some areas where the tours take place are often lower than comparable standards than what the client may reasonably expect in their home country or region. The client acknowledges that the degree and nature of personal risk involved depends on the nature of the tour booked or the location(s) in which such a tour is to operate, and that there may be a significant degree of personal risk involved in travel on the tour, particularly if such a tour involves physical activities, travel to remote locations, high altitude activities or other high-risk activities, or travel areas of Africa with under-developed infrastructure.
The client acknowledges they have considered the potential risks, dangers and challenges in light of their own personal capabilities and needs, and expressly assumes the risks attendant to travel under such conditions. The client acknowledges and agrees that Ultimate Wild Safaris Ltd will provide, to the best of its ability, information or guidance to the client with respect to local customs, weather conditions, specific safety concerns, physical challenges or laws in effect in any locations where tours are operated, but will not be liable if the client does not act according to the information provided.

Clients agree that they are responsible for any costs incurred by Ultimate Wild Safaris Ltd, as a result of damage, destruction, theft, or excess cleaning fees caused or occasioned by the client while on tour. Clients agree to immediately report any pre-existing damage of this kind to staff of the accommodation, transportation service, or facility (as appropriate) and/or an Ultimate Wild Safaris Ltd representative as soon as possible upon discovery by the client.
