Burundi Hotels and Lodges.
For the time Ultimate Wild Safaris have been in the business of tour and travel: We visit all accommodation in Uganda ourselves to be able to select the best accommodation for you and to give you advice from personal experience! Our selection criteria are focused on the view, service, location, style and price of each lodge. We give options in different standards and budgets. On this platform you will find our selection of the best hotels and lodges Uganda has to offer.

Accommodation Rating
“Budget Option”: Accommodation such as simple guesthouses or dormitory rooms are available throughout Uganda. Service and amenity standards won't be high and you are likely to share facilities with other guests, but choosing this standard can make a big difference in the price of the tour. Alternatively, you can choose to camp. Some campsites have wonderful locations and Ultimate Wild Safaris can provide you with tents and mattresses.

“Mid-range Option”:
Ultimate Wild Safaris originally focused mainly on the mid-range market and therefore has a special ability to choose the best accommodation of this standard. This is your best option for comfortable, self-contained ('en suite') accommodation set in stunning locations that don't cost a fortune.

“Semi-luxury Option”:
Accommodation falling in this category is more comfortable than the mid-range. The locations are similar, but the details are further refined. These lodges often have a swimming pool, as well.

“Luxury Option”:
The luxurious accommodation is fully equipped, comfortable and usually more spacious than the mid-range options. They often have facilities like swimming pools, masseurs and sometimes even private butlers.

TRAVEL ADVICE
This section will give some of the practical information you may need before departing and while on your trip.
When to visit Burundi.
The best time to visit Burundi is from January until December, when you will have a pleasant temperature and limited till mediocre rainfall. The highest average temperature in Burundi is 23°C in January and the lowest is 20°C in May. The average climate figure for Burundi is a 7, 6. This is based on various factors, such as average temperatures, the chance of precipitation and weather experiences of others. Burundi has 2 types of climates prevailing, namely the tropical savanna climate and moderate climate. If you want to know what the average temperature is in Burundi or when most precipitation (rain or snow) falls, you can find an overview below.

This way, you are well prepared. Our average monthly climate data is based on data from the past 30 years.

Safety and Risks
Every country in the world has a negative travel advice for traveling in Burundi but this was due to the political conflict outbreak that happened in 2015. Ultimate Wild Safaris can only be held responsible for the organization of the trip itself. Traveling against the travel advice of your country therefore will be on your own risk and you will have to sign for this before going on tour with Ultimate Wild Safaris. Please check the status from the website of your own embassy and check if this will affect the validation your travel- or medical insurance. You might have to take alternative or additional travel and health insurances to be covered.

Burundi Visa.
A visa for Burundi MUST be obtained before arrival from the consulate or embassy in your home country or via the immigration services. You will need a visa acceptance form with a reference number on it and an invoice with your travel itinerary booked with the national park.

Monrey/Cash
The official currency of Burundi is the Burundian Franc and the American dollar. Many lodge and restaurant prices will be set in US dollars while outside of lodges (souvenirs, snacks, etc.). Burundian Francs will be necessary. Most items can be paid for in dollars as well. US dollars printed before 2006 are not accepted in the country. When you exchange money, use big notes (50 or 100 US dollar). The exchange rate of smaller notes is much lower. Make sure notes are not cut, or damaged in any way. They will not be accepted.

Exchange Rates
It’s good to have some US dollars with you at all times. This is the hard currency in Burundi and most widely used. For smaller items like souvenirs and local items we recommend you to change some of the dollars to Burundian Francs. Before leaving the country, you may exchange Burundian Francs into Euros, dollars or pounds (obviously at a less favorable rate).

ATM Cards.
You can only find them in major cities like Bujumbura. Do realize that the amount you can take out per day is sometimes limited to about $100,-. Note as well that ATMs can be empty or not working due to power cuts. Make sure you always have enough cash with you as a backup!

Credit Card:
Credit cards are only accepted at some lodges. Only at mayor hotels and up market lodges can this be used and these will add an extra 5 to 10% to the bill.

Traveler Cheques:
Traveler cheques are not commonly used in Burundi.

Tipping
In Burundi, it is customary and often expected that you give a tip to the local staff such as guides, rangers, and drivers. A common tip of US$ 10 – 15 per person per day can be expected for your tour leader who goes with you the entire tour. For you driver a tip of US$ 10 per day for the entire group is sufficient. In restaurants, we recommend a tip of about 10% of the bill.

Plugs and Voltage
In Burundi, European style plugs: 240 V, 50 Hz are the norm.

Internet in Burundi
Internet cafes can be found though the connection is generally very slow. WIFI is sometimes available in lodges.

Charging camera and phone
You can charge your cameras, phones and other electric items in most hotels. If you bring a couple of chargeable items you might consider bringing an adaptor with extra outlets since the amount of outlets is often limited. We'd advise you to bring extra batteries for your camera, since some hotels don’t have power and power cuts might occur.

Luggage
We request you to bring a bag or suitcase made from a soft material. Hard cover suitcases are difficult to place in the car and are likely to break on the bumpy roads. When traveling with 4 persons or more we request you to limit the weight of your bag/suitcase to 15 kg.

Phone
Mobile telephony has become very big in Burundi. Throughout the country sim cards sell for less than a US dollar which you then can top up with credit and make reasonably priced calls to most international destinations.

Health
Contact your general practitioner at least 8 weeks before your trip to check whether you need any vaccinations or other preventive measures. Country specific information and advice is published by the National Travel Health Network and Centre, and useful information about healthcare abroad, including a country-by-country guide of reciprocal health care agreements with the UK, is available from NHS Choices.

Medical facilities in Rwanda are limited, particularly outside major towns. Medical help at the scene of an accident is likely to be equally scarce. In the case of a serious accident or illness, evacuation by air ambulance may be required. Make sure you have adequate travel health insurance and accessible funds to cover the cost of any medical treatment abroad and/or repatriation. We highly recommend you to get a good travel insurance that covers travelling to countries with a negative travel advice. For more information please check the insurance section.

IMPORTANT ITEMS TO HAVE IN YOUR HAND LUGGAGE
• Passports, money, tickets • Sunglasses
• Medication you use at home (always in your hand luggage, just in case you lose your suitcase!) • Hand Medicine: analgesic, allergy pills, remedy for diarrhea (maybe Imodium), malaria pills, plasters and disinfectant wipes
• Binoculars (so you get to see the leopard way out there in the tree!) • Camera and memory cards more than you expect to use, including battery charger and a bag to protect the camera from Africa’s fine, red dust
• Shoulder bag with sturdy strap and zip. A money belt or good inside pockets that can be zipped up. • A few photocopies of all personal documents such as passports, visas, flights, travel insurance, vaccination card, international debit cards, (Master Card, Visa credit cards etc.) driving license
• Telephone list for immediate blocking of lost debit card and insurance. • Mail addresses of those you wish to send postcards or send messages too.
• Notebook and pens • A good book or something to keep you entertained on the flight.

Health screening
Due to the ongoing outbreak of Ebola virus disease in neighboring countries you may be subject to a quick thermal scanner screening and/or a health questionnaire at the airports upon boarding or disembarking a plane.

Border closures
Due to the volatile security situation in the area, authorities could close the Burundi–Rwanda border at any time. Periodic closure of the Burundi–Democratic Republic of Congo border can occur without notice.

Other requirements
Visitors to Burundi must have an onward ticket.

Yellow fever;
This is potential entry requirements related to yellow fever (vaccines section).

Medical services and facilities.
Health care is inadequate. You will likely need medical evacuation in case of serious illness or injury. For medical evacuations, planes need to fly in from other countries. Make sure you get travel insurance that includes coverage for medical evacuation and hospital stays.

Laws & culture
You must abide by local laws of Burundi.

Gay Travelers.
Burundian law prohibits sexual acts between individuals of the same sex. Those convicted can face imprisonment. LGBTQ2 travelers should carefully consider the risks of travelling to Burundi.

Photography Permit
Obtain permission before taking photographs of military installations, airports, government buildings and local residents.
