Travel Guide To  Lake Bunyonyi Islands, Uganda Wildlife and Cultural Safari Tours.
Top Things to do around Lake Bunyonyi:  Believed to be the second deepest lake in Africa, Lake Bunyonyi is one of Uganda's top natural treasures. Hence it's a must-visit on any tour in Uganda. Lake Bunyonyi is framed by lush, terraced hills, but it’s the 29 islands of various shapes and sizes scattered across the water that make it most magical. Lake Bunyonyi is Uganda’s deepest lake at 2950+ feet (900+ meters) deep.
Lake Bunyonyi is the perfect place to relax, explore: on a quad bike, or go bird-watching. The word bunny in the local language means 'birds', and yes, you guessed right – it's thus called because Bunyonyi Lake is home to an extremely broad range of bird species! Get your camera ready and check out those stunning views.
Aboard on traditional Ugandan wooden boats and paddle to one of Lake Bunyonyi's many hidden islands, one of which has a small adventure park including a zip line! And don't forget to bring your swimsuit. Lake Bunyonyi is known as one of the few lakes in Uganda free of bilharzia (a common parasite found in southern Africa), making its waters safe for swimming. It’s also free of dangerous wildlife like hippos and crocodiles.

According to science, Lake Bunyonyi is relatively shallow at just 130 feet (about 40 meters). The locals believe that the lake is much deeper. According to some sources, the lake reaches a maximum depth of 2950 feet (900 meters). This would make Lake Bunyonyi the second deepest lake in Africa.

Lake Bunyonyi sits at an elevation of 6437 feet (1962 meters) and is surrounded by beautiful green terraced hills. 29 islands of different shapes and sizes sit scattered across the water. The lake is so beautiful that the Ugandan government decided to put its picture on their 5000 shilling note between 2004 and 2009.

Birdwatching

The name Bunyonyi means “place of many little birds” in the local language. More than 200 species inhabit the area. I’m not really into bird watching but I do know that Lake Bunyonyi is a prime location for the hobby.

The weather is cool and comfortable for hiking. We advise all hikers to wear comfortable sports or hiking shoes and provide walking sticks and a bottle of mineral water for all hikers. This day tour starts at 9:00 am or 2:00 pm daily, from Bunyonyi Safaris Resort, where you are welcome to spend the rest of your day enjoying the resort facilities after your hike.

Go For A Swim

It is safe to swim in the lake. No dangerous parasites are present and the water is hippo and crocodile free. Surprisingly though, the water is quite cold.

Go For A Canoe or Kayak Ride

Canoes and Kayaks rentals are available at several locations on the lake. Guided tours are also available. The traditional mode of transport here is the dugout canoe which you can also rent. Once you’re in your canoe, be sure to check out some of the 29 islands in the lake.

When to Visit Lake Bunyonyi:

Because the lake is located near the equator, the weather is comfortable year-round. Temperatures can even get a bit cool at night due to the elevation.

If you are going gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forrest, Lake Bunyonyi is an excellent stop to relax either before or after the tour. Lake Bunyonyi is also easily accessible by coach if you are visiting either Kigali or Kampala.

Where to Stay at Lake Bunyonyi:

If you are a budget traveler we recommend you stay in Kabale. Several budget hotels can be found for around $10 per night. Even though it is not on the lake, the town is very laid back and pleasant to walk around and explore. Be sure to negotiate before paying for a room as they love to overcharge foreigners.

If you’d prefer to stay at the lake, you have several options. You can find everything from camping to higher-end lakeside resorts on the shores. Several of the islands also have accommodation options available.
