Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Bujumbura

Arrive at Bujumbura International Airport and transfer to your hotel. Depending on arrival time, enjoy a half-day city tour of Bujumbura, exploring its lively markets, cultural sites, and lakeside views.

Later, visit Rusizi National Park for a boat cruise along the Rusizi River, where it meets Lake Tanganyika. Expect to see hippos, crocodiles, and a variety of bird species.


Day 2: Source of the Nile & Karera Waterfalls

After breakfast, visit the southernmost source of the Nile in Burundi. Continue to the spectacular Karera Falls, a series of cascading waterfalls surrounded by lush vegetation.

Enjoy scenic views of rolling hills, tea plantations, and rural landscapes.


Day 3: Gitega & Ruvubu National Park

Travel to Gitega, the cultural heart of Burundi. Visit the famous Gishora Drum Sanctuary to experience traditional drumming performances.

Optional visit to the National Museum of Gitega for ethnographic insights.

Proceed to Ruvubu National Park, home to hippos, buffaloes, antelopes, monkeys, and over 400 bird species.


Day 4: Kigwena Forest & Rumonge Fishermen

Drive to Kigwena Forest Reserve for a guided nature walk. Spot monkeys, baboons, birds, and diverse flora.

Continue to Rumonge for a cultural experience with local fishermen along Lake Tanganyika. Learn traditional fishing methods and enjoy the lakeside atmosphere.


Day 5: Departure

Day 1
  • 08:00 AM

    Day 1: Arrival in Bujumbura Capital City.
    You will have a half day tour in Bujumbura, and a cultural safari around Bujumbura in the morning. You will visit Rusizi national park where a possible boat cruise in Rusizi river can let you explore Hippos, Birds and the joining point between Rusizi River and Lake Tanganyika.
    The Belvedere climb offers a nice view of Bujumbura city, independence hero monument. You will also visit explorer’s memorial; a huge rock in the suburbs of Bujumbura commemorating the meeting between Stanley and Livingstone.
    Then dinner and overnight at Club du Lac Tanganyika Hotel.

Day 2
  • 08:00 AM

    Day 2 : Visit to the source of Nile/waterfalls.

    Have breakfast and you will take the direction of the source of falls, and then Karera waterfalls. You will enjoy the magnificent tea plantations and the landscapes. All these make you carry your camera ready for the photos.
    Then later, visit waterfalls and after drive to Gitega. This is the second town and colonial capital of Burundi. You will also visit Gitega national Museum with its collection of art facts, Gitega city administrative offices, catholic location of Mushasha and its also different schools.
    You will visit the drum sanctuary of Gishora. This is one of the famous drum sites of Burundi. The site also houses two ritual drums that were never beaten – Ruciteme and Murimirwa.
    The two names are intimately linked to the farming vocation and also refer to fertility, characteristic of king. You will then visit the drum sanctuary of Gishora in order to relive the cultural tradition of Burundi. Have lunch at Gitega city and after, tour the city.
    This is the second largest town of the country recently became the political capital; with much colonial architecture. It also hosts the national museum with its ethnographic and archeological collections.
    Then dinner and overnight at Orange or Helena Hotel.

Day 3

    Day 3: Gitega_Ruvubu National Park
    Have breakfast and then drive to Ruvubu national park. Along the way you will contemplate the beautiful landscapes of the central plateau of the country. You will see buffalos, monkeys, antilopes, birds and beautiful vegetation.
    You will eat lunch in Gitega at Orange or Helena Hotel. Then later drive to Bujumbura for overnight at club du lac Hotel.

Day 4

    Day 4: Kigwena reserves - Rumonge fishermen.
    Have breakfast and after drive to Kigwena national park for a walk in the forest in order to search for its flora and fauna including; Chimpanzees, numerous species of Monkeys and baboons.
    You will visit springs water at Mugara; an attractive spot to tourists for it's believed to be the source of healing. You will have lunch at Blue bay and beach relaxation.
    Then drive back to Bujumbura for dinner and overnight at Club Du lac Tanganyika Hotel.
