"Bwindi impenetrable forest national park; The popular name Bwindi derives from a local phrase called "mubwindi Bwa nyinamuraki", which most originally referred to as the mubwindi swamp in the southeast of the park rather than the forest itself. A century ago, the name goes back when a family migrating from the Kisoro area found them standing at the southern end of a seemingly impenetrable swamp.
The parents asked the swamp spirits for guidance and they were told if only they sacrificed their most beautiful daughter nyinamuraki the family would cross without any mishap.
After two days of deliberation, the family decided that they could not turn back south and so they threw the girl into the water to drown and went on their way safely to the other side. When news of the sacrifice spread, people began to avoid the swamp calling it mubwindi Bwa nyinamukari – a dark place of nyinamuraki, and that gave the birth of the name Bwindi for this impenetrable forest park. In the afternoon you will have a photo tour of the landscapes of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park for a photo tour as you transfer to Lake Bunyonyi for an overnight stay at a booked lodge as you warm up to explore the Lake Bunyonyi Islands and tribes on a boat."
ABOUT BWINDI IMPENETRABLE FOREST PARK :
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is located in southwestern Uganda in East Africa. Situated along the Democratic Republic of Congo border next to the Virunga National Park and on the edge of the western Rift Valley. It comprises 331 square kilometers of jungle forests and contains both montane and lowland forest and is accessible only on foot.
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is regarded to be one of the most biological forests in Africa, largely due to its antiquity and an altitude range of between 1,160 and 2,607m above sea level. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a true rainforest, spread over a series of steep ridges and valleys that form the eastern edge of the Albertine Rift Valley. The Bwindi Impenetrable National Park has an average rainfall of 1,500mm, and it is a vital catchment area, the source of five major rivers, which flow into Lake Albert.
Tourism to Bwindi focuses on Gorilla tracking at two locations, Buhoma and the Nkuringo. More than half of the World’s mountain Gorilla population is resident in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. An estimated 320 individuals live in 15 troops.
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park harbors at least 120 mammal species more than any national park in Uganda. The list consists mainly of small mammals such as Rodents and Bats, to over 11 primates, including the healthy chimpanzee population, Red-tailed and blue monkeys, black and white colobus monkeys, and Olive baboons.
A total of 350 bird species have been recorded in Bwindi. Of particular interest to birders are 23 species endemic to the Albertine Rift, and at least 14 species recorded nowhere else in Uganda, among them the African green broadbill, white-tailed blue flycatcher, brown-necked parrot, and freezers eagle owl. In addition to its extensive bird checklist, Bwindi is also home to at least 200 butterfly species, including eight Albertine Rift Endemics.
Gorilla tracking is the major tourist activity in Bwindi. There are four gorilla groups in Bwindi available daily for tourists. Mubare Group (10 gorillas, 1 silverback) was opened for tourism in 1993, Habinyanja group (18 gorillas, 1 Silverback) opened in July 1998; Rushegura group (10 gorillas, 1 Silverback) was opened in July 2004, while Nkuringo group (19 gorillas, 2 silverbacks) was opened for tourism in April 2004. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is widely thought to support the greatest diversity of any East African forest, and the Buhoma area has more to offer than Gorilla tracking. Five different trails, ranging from 30 minutes to eight hours lead from Buhoma offering the opportunity to enjoy the humility of the forest and several different monkey species. For birders, over 190 bird species have been recorded in the Buhoma area.
The Munyanga River trails; lie outside the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park so no guide is needed. It is an ideal short walk for visitors with little time. Here you can see birds and primates on the forest edge.
The waterfall trail; provides an attractive feature of the forest with a profusion of tree ferns, epiphytic ferns, orchids, and Bwindi’s colorful array of butterflies. This trail, which leads to 3 delightful crystal waterfalls, typifies your impression of a tropical rainforest.
Muzubijiro Loop Trail offers breathtaking views of Bwindi Forest, Western Rift Valley, and Virungas. On the way, you witness hundreds of prehistoric tree ferns. The top of this trail is a great place for a picnic lunch.
The Rushura Trail takes about 3 hours and offers good views across the western rift valley floor. Congo’s Parc Nationale des Virungas provides a spectacular backdrop and on clear days like Lake Edward and the Rwenzori Mountains to the West.
Ivo River Trail; the longest trail in the park and will occupy you for a full day. It is highly recommended for bird watchers.
Buhoma Village Tourist walks; a recent introduction is a three-hour stroll through Buhoma and its margins to see the customs and practices of the Bakiga and Batwa people. The tour takes on varied activities such as farming, brewing local beer, and dispensing traditional medicines, and concludes with dancing displays by members of the Batwa community.
Hit the Trail in your car; Visitors with their own 4 -4-wheel drive transport should consider crossing the rugged center of the park through Ruhija. This transect affords the visitor Uganda’s finest vistas of deep undisturbed forests. Watch out for duikers, primates, and both forest and grassland bird species. In Ruhija, visitors can take the three-hour scenery-packed hike to the Mubwindi swamp. You may also walk to the Bamboo zone (the only such area in the park).
The Bamboo Trail; The Bamboo trail offers 14 vegetation types and is one of the areas of highest diversity in the park. At the top of this trail, you witness panoramic views encompassing L. Bunyonyi and Mafuga forest.

Day 13: Hiking Mountain Murungole To Explore the Ik Tribal People Villages on 20 Days 19 Nights Best of Uganda Cultural Photo Safari Tour and Uganda Wildlife Photo Safari Tour
Have breakfast at your lodge and then leave for a 3 to 4 hours mountain murungole hike to the Ik tribal people crossing via usake river for landscape, portrait, and architecture photography, The Ik tribal people are also under the Karamojong umbrella and sometimes called Teuso are ethnos numbering about 10,000 people living high within the mountains of Morungole northeastern Uganda near the border with Kenya, next to the Turkana peoples and within the Kidepo Valley Park Region of Northeastern Uganda.
The Ik Tribal People are believed to have migrated from Ethiopia and first settled in Kenya and migrated to what’s now Kidepo Valley National Park. “Ik” means “head of migration” or the primary ones to migrate here. Thanks to government interference beginning within the 1960s, the Ik’s traditional hunting, and gathering arwasere made into a Wildlife Reserve, the Ik people were displaced from their land to make the Kidepo Valley National Park and consequently suffered extreme famine. They were regularly raided due to their relative weakness to other tribes neighboring them. They, therefore, began to migrate up to the Morungole Mountains where they will be found and visited today and sleep in relative peace.
The Ik people were hunters and gatherers however thanks to cattle raids from other tribes like the Turkana and Pokot of Kenya, Karamojong umbrella tribes of Uganda, and therefore the Toposa of South Sudan they gave up cattle herding for farming, goat/sheep keeping, and honey production. Their language may be a member of the highly divergent Kuliak sub-group of the Nilo-Saharan languages.
The Ik and the Ik people sleep in several small villages arranged in clusters, which comprise the entire “community”. The tiny villages are surrounded by an outer wall and then sectioned off into friend-based “neighborhoods” called Odoks. Each Odok is sectioned into walled-off households called asks, with front yards and in some cases, granaries. There’s no mattress or mat, but a trough scooped out of the world floor to mark the bounds of a bed.
The Ik people are polygamous and men can marry as many wives as they need to depend upon the number of beehives one has. A good man owns as many as 50 beehives and may give about five to 10 hives as a gift. The primary wife features a ‘husband’ status over other wives and wife inheritance after divorce or widowhood is practiced. Virginity isn’t a problem before marriage, adolescents do engage in premarital sex far away from the community eye.
The proximity of boys and girls within the community affords many opportunities. However, sex and marriage within an equivalent clan are taboo, and adultery (of the woman) is punished by death. Every woman features a hut and therefore the men make rounds among their wives within the neighborhood. Children move out after five years of age, to remain with a grandmother until they’re about 11 to 13. The women marry and therefore the boys’ team in groups of 5 or six, and build one hut to remain in till they get a wife and leave.
The age band groups consist of; The ‘Junior Group’ that is formed from children from the ages of three to eight and therefore the ‘Senior Group’ consists of those between eight and thirteen. No adults take care of the youngsters, who teach one another the fundamentals of survival. However, it’s not certain whether this practice is typical Ik tradition or merely triggered by unusual famine conditions. The raising of youngsters is sort of different here, polygamy is a component of family life and there’s not much of a proper education besides learning to defend them.
A day with the Ik People high on Morungole Mountain which has a number of the most stunning scenery altogether of Uganda is just a tremendous adventure this gives you a rare insight into an endangered tribe of Africa with but 10.000 members which renders it as endangered for its future existence as they plan to eke out a living high within the mountains with a number of the foremost fantastic scenery altogether of Uganda.
The experience with this very special Ik tribe in Uganda helps you to find out more about their cultural habits like paying for gifts with 5 to 10 beehives, chickens, goats, and money rather than cattle, and childbirth. Learn more about what percentage of children at a young age accept each other or their grandmother. How polygamy is practiced here and about lifestyle in an Ik community.
The Ik people are warm-hearted, once you reach their villages you’ll be greeted warmly with traditional dancing often in Ik finery, they need therefore welcome tourism since it adds a touch of income to their community and more so tourism has helped to make awareness within the Ik tribe.
Getting to the Ik people is such a tremendous experience since it involves an all-day venture up and down the steep mountains with a guide who speaks the Ik Language. You’ve got to be physically fit to climb the mountains – the height of Mount Morungole is 2,749 meters above water level and a hike over here is torture for those that aren’t fit.
You’ll find simply stunning, breathtaking scenery the upper your climb takes you, into the valleys below you and the valley of Kenya. Your hike up the mountains visiting the Ik tribe is going to be one of the highlights of sometime in Uganda, a memorable experience! Enjoy the various cultural ways of the Ik people, learn from them, and luxuriate in a number of their local beers with them, it’ll be quite different from what you’re wont to. Clients on the road to the Ik community are welcome to offer donations in any form.

The major tourist sites within this forest are the Kaniyo Pabidi Ecotourism site, Busingiro Ecotourism site, and Kaniyo Pabidi Ecotourism site which are located at boundaries to Murchison Falls National Park and dominated by Mahogany and Iron-wood trees. The 115-kilometer expanse is a remote chunk of the Budongo forest. Its isolation once in a while offers a haven for the Lions, Leopards as well as Buffaloes. Early in the morning is the ideal time to set out touring because then you will have an opportunity to find a number of the forest inhabitants licking salt by the forest glades. River Waiga offers refreshment to the various Uganda safaris wildlife species within this forest.
Some of the Activities to Enjoy within this forest include:
1). Birding: The forest is among the most ideal places in Uganda to have a guided bird watching tour by the Royal Mile that extends from Nyabyeya Forestry College to the research station.
2). The Chimpanzee Tracking experience: Is the number one priority here. Starting in October up to January, the time when the fruits are shorter in supply, the chimps move a lot covering a wider area so the success of seeing them drops to about 50% rate. Fortunately, there is a diversity of Accommodation facilities available from where you can base to enjoy Uganda tours; Chimpanzee trekking as well as exciting forest walks.
3). Birding in Budongo Forest: Among the various bird species that have been recorded in this forest are more than 360 species that will certainly reward you with a very amazing Budongo Forest birding safari experience in this great forest in Uganda. In addition, there are 290 butterflies species, 130 Moths species, 465 tree species, as well as 24 mammals nine of which are actually primates.
The Budongo Forest reserve is among the most significant birding destinations in Uganda and is located on the escarpment northeast of the stunning Lake Albert. The forest is characterized by a medium-altitude damp semi-deciduous verdant forest that covers 42 800 hectares, with patches of Savanna as well as woodland. This Budongo Forest sits on a gently rolling landscape, with a wide-ranging slope north-northwest towards the Great Rift Valley.
This Budongo Forest is drained by 4 tinny rivers, which are Waisoke, Sonso, Bubwa, plus Wake that empty into Lake Albert. The Budongo has 5 major forest types that include: swamp-forest, mixed, Cynometra-mixed, colonizing plus the Cynometra. The greater part of this forest reserve is sheltered by tropical high-forest communities.
The Mid altitude semi-deciduous Cynometra-Celtis forest occupies close to half of the total site whereas the Combretum savanna is extensive within the drier regions. There are several Eco-tourism sites found at Kaniyo Pabidi plus Busingiro. Because of Murchison falls national park’s biodiversity, the park stands out as the best place for Uganda safaris and short weekend breaks for wildlife and nature lovers.
There are 2 endemic bird species within the Budongo forest, which cannot be seen in other parts of East Africa. This forest comes second after the Semuliki National Park as the most important forest in Uganda with species of the Guinea Congo forest-Biome. The Yellow-footed Flycatcher, simply known in Budongo within Uganda, was common within the mature forest, however today it is extremely rare to see.
Illadopsis puveli, a new addition, isn’t seen in another place in East Africa. Additional species that rank Budongo as one of the finest bird-watching destinations in East Africa include the Zoothers camaronensis, Ceratogymna fistulation, Neafrapus Cassini, Batis ituriensis, Smithornis rufolateralis, Sylvietta denti as well as Ixonotus guttatus. These different species are as well seen in just a few additional forests within Uganda. Rare forest birds have recently several times been recorded within the forest and among these are the Pitta reichenowi as well as Parmoptila woodhouse. Within this forest, Bird watching is properly facilitated with a widespread maintained 115-kilometer track system.
